Our Notebooks

Notebook, the one aspect that almost all FTC teams dread. After all, you most likely got into robotics for the engineering or programming aspects, not because you wanted to write about those things. While these are valid completes, we learned the hard way how much the notebook really matters. In our first season, the notebook was quickly pushed to the back burner. We won zero awards and managed to secure a spot at state solely based on our rookie robot and luck. During our second season, we decided early on to make the notebook a major priority resulting in winning awards such as the Think and Connect awards along with Second Place Inspire. Now we aren't claiming that we are notebook experts, however, we are able to speak from experience what improvements we made and how those affected our competition outcomes.

A great example of what not to do...
  • Very little pictures

  • Pictures are not clearly explained

  • Hard to read

  • A lot of rambling

Simple improvements that make a BIG difference...
  • Multiple pictures for every meeting

  • Label pictures so that it is clear what is happening

  • Find an organizational structure

  • Make sure everyone contributes to the writing

  • Stay caught up (Add entries for each meeting within the week)
